Boston Medical Center receives its largest gift.
2017
Donated by John and Eileen Grayken to create the Grayken Center for Addiction Medicine, the $25 million gift is the largest in the history of the institution, though much smaller than the largest gifts to other Boston hospitals. According to the Boston Globe, “The BMC rarely benefits from what is known as the grateful patient syndrome, in which people appreciative of the care they receive later make contributions to express their gratitude. It’s not that BMC doesn’t have grateful patients; it’s that it has few thankful patients with money to donate.”
